Late-Night Hosts Mock Trump Over Inflation and Birthday Party

Late-night hosts called out Donald Trump’s lies over a peace deal in Iran and inflation while also expressing embarrassment over his Monster energy drink-sponsored, UFC birthday party.

Seth Meyers

On Late Night, Seth Meyers reminded viewers that Trump ran on a pro-peace ticket during the 2024 campaign. Meyers remarked that being pro-peace is not “a bonus feature” for a president and should just be expected anyway. But in his second term, Trump has attacked one out of every 13 countries on Earth, leading Meyers to wonder if it was a misheard campaign promise and that he was actually an “8-piece candidate”, showing a picture of him enjoying KFC.

Meyers said that, surprisingly “Donald Trump lied” and during his campaign he “repeated that lie over and over again”, even though he has now claimed that wasn’t the case. “You said it all the fucking time!” Meyers said. Trump is now claiming he is “doing everything he can now to stop the war in Iran that he started”, Meyers said, and that we are still very close to a deal. Meyers added that gas prices are now so high that he “had to learn to ride a unicycle”.

Even the “most diehard sycophants on Fox” have started to question Trump’s claims of an Iran peace deal, with Meyers saying he has alleged being close to fixing things “more times than HBO has rebranded”. His other big campaign promise was to lower prices and end inflation on day one, although “nothing gets done in day one of any job”, Meyers said. Inflation is now higher than it was when Joe Biden was in office and when asked, Trump said: “I love the inflation.” “I thought you were gonna end it?” Meyers asked before adding that he “can’t think of a more tone-deaf thing for a president to say”. Trump “lies so easily” and his presidency has been a “bait and switch”, Meyers said. “The idea that Trump would ever keep one of his promises is ludicrous,” Meyers said.

Jimmy Kimmel

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host spoke about Wednesday’s NBA game in New York. “I have not seen that many celebrities jump out of their seats since Will Smith at the Oscars,” he joked. Big names in attendance included Adam Sandler, Taylor Swift and Larry David who was pictured beaming. “Larry David was happy!” he said. “Do you have any idea how rare that is?”

This week also saw the start of the World Cup in the US, but there are fewer visitors from overseas as “everyone in the world hates us right now” as Trump has “made a mess of pretty much every place especially the Middle East”, Kimmel said. The war has now been going on for 15 weeks and Trump is “trying to make it sound better by comparing the war to Vietnam”, which he claims he would also have ended within a few months, “had I not dodged it and they put me in charge”, Kimmel added.

This week has also seen Elon Musk’s SpaceX launch the biggest IPO in history which would make Musk the first ever trillionaire, a fact that Kimmel called “unsettling”. He called Musk “one of the weirdest people we’ve ever seen on this planet” and his riches will make “your parents Walmart greeters”. Kimmel joked that he came over to the US as the “son of a humble emerald mine owner” and noted that Tesla paid almost no federal income tax over the past three years. “For a guy who has been openly cheering immigrants getting kicked out of the country for stealing from us, he sure seems like an immigrant who’s been stealing from us to me,” he said.

This weekend is also Trump’s 80th birthday, making him the oldest president and allegedly the healthiest, “at least according to the doctors he paid to say that”, Kimmel said. He will have a “big MMA-themed birthday party” with a UFC game on the White House lawn despite there being a 46% chance of rain in Washington DC. “If God wanted the White House to be struck by lightning that would have happened 18 months ago,” Kimmel said. The entire event is sponsored by Monster energy drinks and Kimmel showed viewers a look at the garish setup. “Could there be a better metaphor for this administration than a giant Monster energy logo on the White House lawn?” he asked.
