Friday's episode of BBC Morning Live delivered an emotionally charged moment when presenter Ugo Monye became overwhelmed while discussing a young carer's touching story during the show's Children in Need coverage.

Emotional moment on morning television

Hosts Kym Marsh and Ugo Monye returned to screens on Friday, November 14, 2025, focusing on the remarkable fundraising efforts for BBC Children in Need. The programme featured various initiatives supporting the charity, including The One Show's Challenge Squad and Sara Cox's Great Northern Marathon challenge.

The emotional highlight came when Kym Marsh shared the story of 10-year-old Spencer, who has been caring for his single father since he was just five years old. His father was medically discharged from the Army and suffers from a degenerative disc disease.

The story that moved presenters to tears

Spencer's father recounted how his son's caring nature emerged at a very young age. "Spencer was only four and he'd literally gone 'Dad, the house is a mess but it's ok, I'll tidy up,'" he told Wales Online. "And as lovely as it was knowing my son wanted to help it was heartbreaking. No one wants their kids to help them out."

The young carer himself expressed his constant concern for his father's wellbeing. "I worry about my dad," Spencer explained. "When I play out I feel my dad might need me so I go in sometimes and my friends are like 'what are you doing?' and I'm like 'I'm just checking if my dad's ok.'"

Thanks to Children in Need donations, The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Young Carers Group has been providing crucial support to Spencer and his family.

Presenters' heartfelt reactions

As the segment concluded, co-host Ugo Monye was visibly moved, telling Kym Marsh: "I've gone." When the conversation returned to him, he struggled to speak, prompting Marsh to place a comforting hand on his knee and ask: "Are you ok?"

Taking a moment to compose himself, Monye responded: "Yeah. Spencer's absolutely amazing and it just underlines exactly why we need it (Children in Need)."

The programme also featured The One Show's Alex Jones, who made a candid admission about her family life. Discussing children's access to damaging material on mobile devices, Jones revealed she has banned iPads and phones in her household after attending a talk by the charity Smartphone Free Childhood.

"It's a real worry," said Jones, who shares three children with her husband Charlie Thomson. "It's the thing that keeps me awake at night actually, more than anything else."

BBC Morning Live continues to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
