BBC's Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall has opened up about the cancellation and subsequent revival of ITV's period drama Sanditon, calling it a unique experience in his career.
Sanditon's Unexpected Journey from Axe to Renewal
Inspired by Jane Austen's unfinished novel, Sanditon initially faced cancellation during its debut run after failing to attract a substantial audience. However, the series made a remarkable comeback for a second series in July 2022, much to the delight of its dedicated fanbase.
Kris Marshall, who portrays ambitious entrepreneur Tom Parker in the show, reflected on this unusual turn of events in a recent interview. "It is the first show I've been on that has been cancelled and then reinstated," he revealed, highlighting the rarity of such a reversal in the television industry.
The Power of Fan Advocacy
Marshall attributed Sanditon's resurrection entirely to its passionate supporters, particularly those across the Atlantic. "The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back," he explained, acknowledging their relentless efforts.
The actor expressed deep gratitude for the extraordinary displays of support, including sand art tributes created on beaches near filming locations. He described the fanbase as "relentless" in their dedication, which ultimately persuaded producers to recommission the series for two additional installments.
Returning to Tom Parker's Vision
Marshall shared his excitement about stepping back into the role of Tom Parker, a character determined to transform Sanditon into a premier seaside destination. Despite a devastating fire in the first series that threatened his dreams of rivaling Brighton, Tom remains steadfast in pursuing his grand vision as the story continues to unfold.
The actor's enthusiasm for the project is palpable, as he looks forward to exploring new developments in the character's journey and the show's evolving narrative.
Current Projects and Beyond Paradise
While reflecting on Sanditon's past, Kris Marshall remains actively engaged in his current role as DI Humphrey Goodman in the Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise. Having won over audiences through three successful series, he returns once again to portray the endearing, sometimes bumbling detective.
The fourth series premieres tonight, with the opening episode focusing on Humphrey and Martha Lloyd's adjustment to married life following their long-awaited nuptials in the Christmas special. The plot involves a crime novelist's death that eerily mirrors details from his final novel, prompting Humphrey to investigate whether it was coincidence or murder.
Additionally, the episode sees The Lily Bond adrift, leaving Humphrey and Martha back home with Anne, adding further complexity to their new domestic situation.
Beyond Paradise continues to captivate viewers with its blend of mystery and character-driven storytelling, airing on BBC One at 8pm on March 27.
