Kim Medcalf on Sam Mitchell's Emotional EastEnders Storyline and Reunion
Kim Medcalf on Sam Mitchell's Emotional EastEnders Storyline

EastEnders actress Kim Medcalf, who plays Sam Mitchell on the BBC soap, has opened up about the Mitchell family reunion and the dramatic events unfolding on screen. It has been around 20 years since Grant, Phil, and Sam Mitchell were all together on the show. Grant's recent return in April brought the siblings back together, four months after Sam's own comeback to Walford.

Nostalgic Filming with Co-Stars

Medcalf described the experience of working again with Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden as "nostalgic." The Mitchell siblings have grown apart since the death of their mother, Peggy Mitchell, in 2016. "There is a real familiarity and natural chemistry between us, which we’ve all felt while filming," she said. "The writers have given us some lovely domestic moments and I’ve really enjoyed those because they show the true fabric of the Mitchells beyond the usual chaos."

She added: "Sam genuinely loves having them together too, and it really feeds into where she’s at in her life right now. Sam and Phil may have had their issues, but they’re in a good place now, and with everything going on, especially with Nigel’s death, Sam really steps up, becoming that voice of reason and filling a matriarchal role the family’s been missing."

Nigel's Funeral and Kidnapping Drama

The Mitchells must rally together as Nigel Bates' funeral takes place next week. Phil is struggling after the death of his close friend last month, whom he cared for after a dementia diagnosis. However, their grief is compounded when Grant's son, Mark Fowler Jr., is kidnapped by masked men. Mark owes money to his boss Russell, and Grant's actions worsen the situation. Medcalf revealed that the Mitchells are forced to save Mark. "Everything escalates very quickly. Although the plan is initially to try and save Mark after the funeral, they realise they can’t leave him there and agree that Nigel would have wanted them to act. It balances huge emotion with flashes of humour and nostalgia – there’s some classic Mitchell moments."

Emotional Filming and Family Bonds

Filming the funeral was heartbreaking for Medcalf. "It was incredibly emotional. Seeing the packed church really felt like the whole community had come together to honour Nigel. Everyone adores Paul [Bradley] too, which made it even more moving. It was handled with real care and respect by Karen [Henthorn], Steve, Ross and production." She believes the events bring the family closer together for the first time in decades. "They’re reminded who they are as a family. For Sam, it reinforces the importance of family, her love for her son Ricky, and that sense that blood ultimately runs deepest."

Medcalf also highlighted Sam's relationship with Billy Mitchell. "They’ve often bonded over being the underdogs, and back in 2004, when Peggy and Phil weren’t in Walford, they were a real team, he was pretty much all she had. So, it was lovely having Billy right in the middle of the rescue madness, because he’s very much part of that family unit."

Sam's Health Battle and Growth

Sam has faced a tough few months after being diagnosed with breast cancer in December. She feared for her life after her mother Peggy's terminal diagnosis with the same disease a decade ago, which led to Peggy taking her own life. Recent scenes saw Sam receive the all clear, but the health battle has encouraged her to become more grounded and nurturing with her family. Medcalf said: "The cancer diagnosis was a huge wake‑up call. When Sam first came back, she had her head in the sand, wanting to do right by Ricky, but avoiding the reality of what might be wrong with her. It’s only through the support of those around her that she finds the strength to face it, which grounds her."

She added: "She’s incredibly lucky that Ricky is so forgiving and emotionally mature, and I’ve loved playing this more nuanced side of Sam. It feels authentic for a woman her age who’s been through so much and has finally realised what means the most to her."

Grant and Mark's Relationship

Sam's brother Grant has had his own parenting troubles, being estranged from his son Mark since discovering he was his father in 2016. With Grant keen to fix things, Medcalf believes there is a chance for reconciliation. "It would take a lot. Grant would have to fully accept that he’s failed Mark and learn how to do right by him, without pushing or forcing it. Sam really understands Mark. She sees beyond the bravado and the lashing out to his vulnerability underneath, and she recognises how abandoned he’s felt by Grant. She’s never judgmental with him - she tries to support Mark, while also helping Grant understand that it’s not about big promises, it’s about simply showing up. At his core, Mark just wants to be loved by his dad, and that anger comes from everything Grant wasn’t there for."

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
