Netflix and Sony have officially confirmed that a sequel to the animated film KPop Demon Hunters is in development. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the project, which is reportedly targeting a 2029 release. The announcement comes as part of a new multi-year writing and directing deal between the duo and Netflix for animated projects.
Kang expressed pride in the continuation of the story, stating: 'I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.' Appelhans added that the team is 'excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve,' describing the characters as 'like family.'
The original film, which follows a fictional K-pop girl group protecting the world from demons using their music, became a global phenomenon. It ranks as Netflix’s most popular movie of all time and earned an Oscar nomination for best animated feature and original song for 'Golden.' A sing-along version was also released in theatres in autumn 2025.
Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria praised Kang and Appelhans for igniting a global fandom that 'crossed languages, generations, and genres.' Netflix Film chairman Dan Lin commended the filmmakers for taking 'a bold creative swing' and creating 'the most popular Netflix movie of all time.' Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville expressed excitement to expand the filmmakers' vision in the next chapter.
