John Travolta showcased a dramatic and unconventional new appearance as he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. The 72-year-old Grease star faced online ridicule after donning a beret and sporting a freshly dyed beard while posing with his daughter, Ella Bleu, 26, at the screening of Karma.
Travolta appeared nearly unrecognizable in the cream headgear, accessorizing with a pair of gold spectacles. Not content with his bookish aesthetic, he pulled a series of zany poses on the red carpet, flashing peace signs and dramatically throwing his hands in the air.
The new look was swiftly criticized by fans, who took to social media to express their bewilderment. One user wrote, "Who is that?" while another commented, "The hat is fine but what's with the beard? He's in his 70s and his beard is black lmao." Others speculated about cosmetic work, with one fan noting, "Had some cosmetic work. Looks 30 years younger."
Further reactions included: "It's weird when 70-year-old men dye their beards black," and "It must be so nice to have so much money you can dress like a surrealist painter on the Left Bank of Paris in the 1930s." One particularly blunt comment read, "WHO is that and what have they done with John Travolta?!" Another joked, "Looks like she's standing next to his Madame Tussaud's wax statue."
