Jamie Dornan Steps into Aragorn Role for New Lord of the Rings Film
Warner Bros has officially announced that Jamie Dornan will portray the iconic character of Aragorn in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The studio made the revelation during its presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, confirming Dornan's casting in a role famously played by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy. Dornan will be credited as Strider, the alias Aragorn uses when first introduced in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Release Date and Returning Cast Members
The film is slated for release on 17 December 2027, with production led by director Andy Serkis and producer Peter Jackson. Several actors from the earlier films will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace as Thranduil. Serkis, who played Gollum in the original and Hobbit trilogies, will once again embody the title character using motion capture technology.
McKellen previously teased at the For the Love of Fantasy event in London last year, hinting at the involvement of Gandalf and Frodo. Wood later added to the speculation, stating cryptically that a "wizard is to be trusted", without confirming or denying McKellen's spoiler.
New Additions and Casting Speculation
In addition to Dornan, the cast includes new members such as Kate Winslet as Marigol, matriarch of the Stoors, and Leo Woodall as Halvard, a Dúnedain who joins Strider on the hunt. This confirms earlier speculation from Knight Edge Media in March, which had suggested Woodall might take on the role of Aragorn, but Warner Bros clarified his part as a supporting character.
Andy Serkis expressed enthusiasm in a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, saying, "Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role. The Hunt for Gollum continues in that tradition, and I’m delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth’s most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien’s world."
Story Details and Screenplay
Set between The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring, the film follows Aragorn as he attempts to track down Gollum before the creature can reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron. The screenplay is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, writers of the original trilogy, alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
In October 2025, Boyens described the story to Empire as "quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria". She added, "It is a specific chunk of an incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature."
Viggo Mortensen's Comments and Franchise Success
Viggo Mortensen, who originated the role of Aragorn, previously commented on the possibility of returning. In May 2024, he told GQ that he was unaware of the story and would only reprise the role if it fit his current age and the character's needs. He reiterated this in June 2024 to The Hollywood Reporter, stating, "The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends."
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, released from 2001 to 2003, and The Hobbit trilogy, from 2012 to 2014, were massively successful, each raking in around $2.9 billion worldwide at the box office. The Hunt for Gollum aims to continue this legacy with a blend of familiar faces and fresh talent, promising an exciting new chapter in the beloved fantasy saga.
