ITV has delivered disappointing news for fans of its flagship soap operas, with Coronation Street and Emmerdale both cancelled once again on the evening of April 14. This marks the latest disruption to the channel's 'soap power hour', which has been repeatedly scrapped in recent weeks to accommodate live sporting events.
Football Takes Priority Over Soaps
The specific cause of this week's schedule change is the Women's European Qualifier football match featuring England's Lionesses against Spain. This high-profile fixture will occupy the prime-time slot typically reserved for the two popular dramas. Emmerdale, which normally airs at 8pm from Monday to Friday, and Coronation Street, scheduled for 8:30pm, will both be absent from ITV's lineup.
Compensation for Viewers
However, ITV has implemented a compensatory measure to ensure loyal viewers do not miss out on their weekly dose of drama. Both soaps will return to their regular timeslots on April 15, and fans will be treated to an extra episode of each programme on Sunday evening. This move is designed to provide the full weekly complement of episodes despite the midweek cancellation.
In contrast, BBC One's EastEnders remains unaffected by the sporting schedule and will broadcast at its usual time of 7:30pm. This consistency offers a reliable alternative for soap enthusiasts on April 14.
A Recurring Pattern of Disruption
This is not an isolated incident. Just two weeks prior, the soaps were similarly cancelled to make way for an international football match between England and Japan, which aired from 7pm to 10:05pm. On that occasion, missed Tuesday episodes were also rescheduled for Sunday broadcasting, establishing a clear pattern of adjustment for major sports fixtures.
Evolution of the Soap Schedule
The current 'soap power hour' format, introduced in January, sees each programme airing a 30-minute episode from Monday to Friday. This replaced the previous arrangement where Coronation Street broadcast hour-long episodes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while Emmerdale aired Monday to Friday with a double episode on Thursdays. The new structure was launched alongside the highly-publicised 'Corriedale' crossover episode, which united the worlds of both soaps for the first time.
Fan Reaction to Past Innovations
The January crossover episode was met with overwhelming praise from viewers, who took to social media to laud the ambitious production. Described as 'absolutely amazing' and 'beautifully done', the special featured a relentless pace of drama including murders, proposals, chase scenes, and multiple deaths. Fans celebrated it as 'the greatest hour of television I’ve ever seen' and expressed hopes for future collaborative episodes.
Despite these creative successes, the soaps' schedules continue to face regular interruptions. Another cancellation occurred recently on March 27, when an England vs Uruguay football match displaced the usual programming. This recurring theme highlights the ongoing tension between ITV's commitment to live sport and its loyal soap opera audience, with the channel employing Sunday broadcasts as a consistent mitigation strategy.
