Sir Idris Elba Spotted Filming Luther Sequel in London

Sir Idris Elba has been seen filming scenes for the upcoming sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun in London, just months after receiving his knighthood from King Charles III. The 53-year-old actor was spotted in Canary Wharf on March 16, with fans sharing videos on TikTok showing him dashing along a road past a Hamptons estate agents, presumably as DCI John Luther in hot pursuit of a suspect.

The film crew used fake rain machines to create a dramatic downpour, prompting amused comments from viewers about the need for artificial rain in typically wet London. One TikTok user noted, “Why would u need fake rain in England??” while another remarked that real rain arrived later in the day.

Netflix confirmed last year that Elba would return as the iconic detective, alongside Ruth Wilson as the psychopathic genius Alice Morgan and Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk. Creator Neil Cross told Netflix’s Tudum: “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around.”

A teaser summary from Netflix reads: “When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?” Director Jamie Payne, returning for the sequel, praised Cross’s “wonderfully dark tale” and expressed joy at reuniting with the cast.

The as-yet-untitled film will follow 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun. It is currently in production with no release date announced.
