A new quiz challenges sports enthusiasts to identify which sport is being played using only sound. The quiz, developed by Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook, asks participants to distinguish between thwacks, pops, and rustles associated with cricket, football, rugby, and hockey.
Most Satisfying Sounds in Sport
The quiz follows a study of 2,000 sports fans, which found that the roar of a stadium erupting after a last-gasp victory is the most satisfying sound in sport, cited by 42% of respondents. The thunderous roar of a Formula 1 car came second, with 27% of the vote, tied with the thwack of a cricket ball being perfectly struck for a six.
Football Leads in Enjoyable Sounds
According to the data from OnePoll.com, nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents believe football generates the most enjoyable sounds, followed by Formula 1 (14%) and tennis (13%). At the opposite end, boxing was deemed to produce the least enjoyable sounds, with 14% of participants naming it the least pleasant.
Notably, 38% of those surveyed said that sporting sounds shape their enjoyment of watching sport, and one in five admitted they have watched or listened to a sport purely because they enjoyed the sound of it.
Calming Effects of Sports Sounds
Of those surveyed, 45% said they find the sounds of live sport relaxing, and 44% find repetitive sporting sounds such as a long tennis rally or the sound of rowing strokes particularly soothing. When asked why sports sounds have such a calming effect, respondents cited feeling part of something bigger (38%), the comforting atmosphere generated by the crowd (36%), and the steady rhythm of play.
Half (49%) believe you don't need to be a sports fan to appreciate the sound of sport. Overall, six in 10 (59%) are confident they could identify the main sports from the sounds of the game alone.
Expert Insight
A spokesperson for Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook, which developed the quiz and commissioned the study, said: "Sports crowds are subtly different. However, this is what makes them so recognisable. Each atmosphere has its own distinct reactions, rhythms and chants."
The spokesperson added: "Sound is a key part of the sports experience. Every sport has its own unique soundtrack, from the background buzz of a crowd to the repetition of play. It's what draws us in, and can shape our enjoyment more than we realise – it's no wonder so many of us can recognise the sport just from the sound."
