Hugh Dennis Hints at Outnumbered Return with Time Jump

Hugh Dennis has hinted that the hit BBC sitcom Outnumbered could return, but with a significant storyline change to account for the passage of time. The show, which last aired a Christmas special in 2016, attracted up to 9.39 million viewers at its peak.

The actor, who played father Pete, suggested a potential future series could see the children now caring for their parents. Speaking fondly of the show, Dennis said: 'I really liked making it, and I’d be very happy to do some more. Maybe in 20 years when the children are looking after us. That would be a great format.'

Dennis reflected on the show's unique appeal, noting: 'I think it was one of those sitcoms that acknowledged how difficult it is to bring up kids. And what an unholy mess it is, quite often.' He added that many fans told him the show mirrored their own lives.

When asked by ITV's Lorraine Kelly about a possible return, Dennis said: 'It's not impossible is it, I don't know. I don't think there are any particular plans for it, but I would love to do another series, or another Christmas special.'

In 2017, Dennis expressed confidence in more specials, saying: 'But there will be more specials because that does seem to work. The special we did last year really worked. I think the key to its success is that people talk on the show the way people speak in real life.'
