A cleaner who worked on Channel 4's How Clean is Your House? for seven years has shared what it was really like behind the scenes with hosts Kim Woodburn and Aggie Mackenzie.
Jason Andrews, from Plymouth, appeared on the programme from 2003 until 2009 alongside his sister and mum, helping to tidy and organise some of the nation's messiest homes. Speaking on behalf of Zingo Bingo, he described the two presenters as "like chalk and cheese, like two colleagues you just would never put in a room together ever."
Behind-the-scenes dynamics
Andrews said Kim was "loud and a little eccentric, but she was very kind to the cleaning team. She really appreciated what we did." Aggie, he added, was "lovely, but the only time you really saw them together was when you were filming a scene."
"Once the filming ended, they went in two separate directions because they're just two completely different people with different personalities. I'm surprised they were ever put together. They kept to themselves unless there were members of the public present," he said.
He noted that people would learn the show was being filmed on their street and come to watch. "They would come out together occasionally, but mostly separately. You very rarely saw them together."
Behind the scenes of the show
Each episode followed the same formula. Accompanied by a dramatic score of horror movie music, Kim and Aggie explored the house on their own, examining the extent of the mess and looking for particularly horrible areas. They then met the resident before the cleaning began, assisted by several professional cleaners including Andrews.
During the cleaning, Aggie would take swab samples from the filthiest areas and analyse them in a lab, often revealing numerous kinds of bacteria, frequently E. coli and Salmonella. Residents often had health problems that directly stemmed from the air quality or pathogens present. Aggie would later show the residents her findings to help them understand the link between their health and their home's condition.
The final section saw Kim and Aggie unveiling the freshly cleaned home, and they'd occasionally return two weeks later to check if the cleaning was maintained.
Production process and legacy
Andrews, who now shares cleaning hacks on social media, said: "What surprised me was how methodical it was. From a production standpoint it was more about time schedules for Kim and Aggie. The producers were only paid a certain amount of time. In terms of the hosts, they were just getting what they needed to show on camera. Even though we were seen on the show, they always sped up our segments."
Channel 4 has been approached for a comment. Kim passed away in June 2025 aged 83 following a short illness, and Aggie paid tribute to her former co-star at the time, writing: "She was an unforgettable woman."
