Hollywood actor Robert Vaughn has been cast in a role on Coronation Street, becoming the first major US star to appear on the long-running British soap, a spokesman has confirmed.
The 78-year-old Oscar-nominated actor, best known for playing Napoleon Solo in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., will portray Milton, a wealthy American who meets Sylvia Goodwin, played by Stephanie Cole, on a cruise.
Producer Phil Collinson expressed his delight at welcoming Vaughn to the show, saying: 'Robert was a huge part of my childhood and a magnificent actor. I am looking forward to seeing the impact this exotic character has on the ladies of Weatherfield.'
Vaughn, who has played con-man Albert Stroller in the BBC series Hustle since 2004, is set to appear on screen early next year. His film credits include The Magnificent Seven, Bullitt and The Towering Inferno, and he was nominated for an Academy Award in 1960 for The City Jungle.
British stars who have previously appeared on the soap include Sir Ian McKellen and Stephanie Beacham.
