Hollyoaks fans have expressed their dismay after the soap announced a major time jump and a series of cast exits. The Channel 4 show is set to fast-forward by a year permanently, resulting in the departure of several 'much-loved characters'. From September, episodes will be reduced from five to three per week, leading to cuts in the cast and crew.
Viewers have taken to social media to voice their concerns, with many admitting they are 'terrified' about the changes. One fan wrote on X: 'I'm actually so scared about the time jump omg.' Another added: 'Scary times, we’ve just got to have faith.' A third commented: 'Absolutely terrified NGL. If they don't tie up stories I want to see the end of I'll be so frustrated but... if my faves don't make it through the time jump I won't even have got a proper ending, they'll just not be there.'
Executive Producer Hannah Cheers explained the decision, saying: 'When we started talking about the move to three episodes a week, we realised we needed a mechanism through which to transition our stories and characters and we kept coming back to this one. It’s bold, daring and is a first for a UK soap; it sums Hollyoaks up perfectly.' She added that the new structure would allow characters to appear on screen for longer, but acknowledged that some would have to leave sooner than expected.
Cheers also confirmed that there would be no traditional stunt week, with the time jump taking centre stage instead. 'Fast-forwarding the show permanently by a year presents us with unlimited story possibilities. Very sadly, we are going to have to say goodbye to some much-loved Hollyoaks villagers – and some earlier than we would have expected to,' she said.
