The second season of High Potential has premiered on ABC, with Kaitlin Olson returning as LAPD consultant Morgan Gillory. The season opens with a two-part mystery involving the 'Game Maker', a villain designed to match Morgan's intellect. Showrunner Todd Harthan explained that the character was crafted to be a 'weird sadistic muse' for Morgan, avoiding a traditional serial killer archetype to maintain a balance of danger and intrigue.
The premiere episode, 'Pawns', sees Morgan return to work while fearing for her children's safety as the Game Maker orchestrates kidnappings. Harthan noted that Morgan is in a 'heightened protective state' this season, with her maternal instincts playing a key role. The storyline involving Morgan's missing ex-husband Roman also continues, with Lieutenant Selena Soto tracking him to Nevada, where Oz and Daphne encounter a mysterious associate played by Mekhi Phifer.
Harthan confirmed that the Roman mystery is the 'main artery' of Season 2, promising answers to big questions over the course of the season. The two-part premiere concludes with 'Checkmate' on Tuesday, September 23 at 10pm on ABC, streaming the next day on Hulu. The show has become ABC's most-watched new series in six years, with the first season finale drawing 13.2 million viewers.
