Heartbeat fans are only now learning who performed the show's iconic theme tune, decades after the series first aired. The ITV drama, which ran from 1992 to 2010, featured a cover of Buddy Holly's classic 'Heartbeat' as its opening music.
The song was performed by Nick Berry, the actor who played PC Nick Rowan in the series from 1992 to 1998. Berry, also known for his role as Simon Wicks in EastEnders, released the cover in 1992, and it reached number two in the UK charts.
Despite the show's popularity, many viewers did not realise that the theme tune was sung by one of its main stars. Social media users have expressed surprise, with some noting that the song still evokes strong nostalgia for their school days.
Berry left Heartbeat in 1998 to star in the BBC drama Harbour Lights. He has since retired from acting but remains a beloved figure among fans of the show.
Episodes of Heartbeat are still available to stream on ITVX, allowing viewers to relive the memories of Sunday evenings spent watching the series.
