George's death occurred in season five when he heroically saved a woman from being hit by a bus. He sustained horrific injuries that left him unrecognisable, even to his colleagues at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. His identity was only revealed when he scrawled '007' on Meredith Grey's hand. Despite surgery, he died from fatal brain swelling.
Speculation about Knight's departure often linked it to a 2006 controversy involving co-star Isaiah Washington, who used a homophobic slur. Knight, who later came out as gay, said the incident was not the cause. Instead, he cited a 'breakdown in communication' with show creator Shonda Rhimes.
Knight told Entertainment Weekly in 2009 that he was unhappy with the direction of his character, particularly the plot where George was unfaithful to Callie with Izzie. He felt he could not trust the writers' answers about George's arc, leading to his decision to leave.
He stated: 'My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George]. And with respect, I'm going to leave it at that.' Concluding, he said: 'There just comes a time when it's so clear that moving on is the best decision.'
