The celebrated gangster saga hailed by many as a rival to The Sopranos is preparing for a powerful return. Sky has unveiled the first trailer for Gomorrah - The Origins, a prequel series that will delve into the brutal beginnings of its iconic characters.
A Beloved Drama's Gritty Return
First premiering in 2014 and concluding its five-season run in 2019, the original Gomorrah series built a fervent fanbase. It was praised for its uncompromising portrayal of the Camorra crime syndicate in Naples, with viewers on IMDb frequently comparing its quality to HBO's legendary mob drama. One fan's 10/10 review stated it was "absolutely brilliant," offering deep psychological insight, while another claimed it was "the best TV series by a LONG way."
Now, the story travels back to 1977 Naples to explore the formative years of the characters fans love to fear. The new six-part drama, like its predecessor, is based on Roberto Saviano's international best-selling book Gomorrah, described by Amazon readers as "superb" and "fascinating."
Meeting the Young Clan
Gomorrah - The Origins introduces younger versions of key figures from the original show. The cast includes Luca Lubrano as a young, ambitious Pietro Savastano, a tough kid from the poor districts of Secondigliano with dreams of power.
He is drawn into the orbit of the neighbourhood's emerging king, Angelo 'A Sirena', played by Francesco Pellegrino. The series also follows convict ‘O Paisano (Flavio Furno) and a young Imma (Tullia Venezia), a talented musician seeking an escape, alongside Annalisa Magliocca (Fabiola Balestriere), who is years away from becoming the fearsome Scianel.
The official synopsis sets the stage: Pietro's quest for status pulls him into a violent power game, forcing him to choose between a life of crime and the potential salvation offered by his love for Imma.
Fan Reaction and What to Expect
The newly released teaser trailer promises the same gritty, dangerous atmosphere that defined the original series, transplanting it to the distinct backdrop of 1970s Italy. Reaction to the preview has been mixed, with fans acknowledging the high bar set by the parent show. One YouTube comment read, "The original is one of the best TV series of all time. A rival to The Sopranos... Hard act to follow," while others urged the creators to "keep the saga going."
Produced by Sky, Gomorrah - The Origins is scheduled to debut on Sky and NOW in early 2026. It aims to show audiences the fated paths that led a generation into a world of organised crime, violence, and inescapable loyalty.
