Inside the 'Gogglebox curse': Tragic deaths and traumatic splits revealed

The beloved Channel 4 series Gogglebox, which has been a staple on screens since 2013, has introduced viewers to iconic families across the UK. However, behind the scenes, many cast members have faced heartbreak, leading to what some call the 'curse of Gogglebox'. This includes relationship splits, disputes, and devastating deaths.

Several Gogglebox couples have parted ways over the years. In 2024, Roisin Kelly confirmed her split from Joe Kyle, with whom she appeared on the show from 2022 until they were axed in 2023. Meanwhile, Stephen Lustig-Webb and his husband Daniel announced their separation after six years of marriage, though they continue to share a home. Stephen described the breakup as 'traumatic' and 'completely devastating'.

Other splits include Eve Woerdenweber and her boyfriend Jay Makin, who broke up in 2015. Jay told The Mirror that the split came 'completely out of the blue' and blamed the pressure of the show. The Gogglebox community has also been rocked by tragic deaths, including former cast member George Gilbey, who died aged 40 in March 2024 after a workplace accident. Mary Cook died aged 92 in 2021, and Andy Michael, an original cast member, died aged 61 that same year.

Leon and June Bernicoff, original stars from 2013, faced tragedy when Leon died in 2017 aged 83. June left the show and wrote a book about their 60-year love story before her death in 2020 aged 82. Former cast members have also criticised the show's pay, with Paige Deville and her mum Sally reportedly receiving £100 for a nine-hour filming session. Reverend Kate Bottley, who appeared for five series, claimed they 'got paid very little'.
