Geena Davis was spotted running errands in Los Angeles on Wednesday, dressed casually in a pink smiley-face hoodie, wide-legged jeans and fuzzy orange slippers. The 65-year-old actress wore a black face mask and had her hair tied back as she enjoyed the California winter weather.
Her outing comes shortly after she spoke out about ageism in the entertainment industry. During an episode of the podcast 'Allison Interviews' released on Tuesday, Davis revealed that a male actor once rejected her as a romantic interest because she was 'too old' – despite him being 20 years her senior.
'A certain male actor that was making a movie said that I was too old to be his romantic interest, and I was 20 years younger than him,' Davis stated. She described ageism in Hollywood as 'very strange and so prevalent.'
The Oscar-winning actress also highlighted the disparity between male and female performers, noting that 'women peak in their 20s and 30s, and men peak in their 40s and 50s as far as actors go.' She added that male stars often want younger co-stars to appear younger themselves, leading to fewer roles for women over 40 and 50.
Davis, who founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media in 2004, pointed out that characters over 50 make up only 20% of screen roles, with women over 50 accounting for just 5% of all characters. The institute has published numerous studies on gender representation in media.
