Gary Lineker Slams FIFA Hydration Breaks as Advertising in World Cup
Gary Lineker Criticises FIFA Hydration Breaks as Ads

Gary Lineker has voiced his disapproval of FIFA's hydration breaks during the World Cup, labelling them as disguised advertising intervals that disrupt the rhythm of matches and affect team performance.

Curacao's Momentum Halted

Curacao experienced this disruption firsthand during their 7-1 defeat to Germany on Sunday. After scoring an equaliser, the match was paused for a scheduled hydration break, despite the Houston Stadium roof being closed and air conditioning running. The interruption shifted the game's momentum, and after the break, Germany regained control, eventually winning convincingly.

Lineker's Comments on The Rest Is Football

On the Netflix show The Rest Is Football, Lineker stated: "Three minutes of a hydration break, even when some stadiums have air conditioning, they're cool, they've got lids on." He added that these breaks are used for advertising, though ITV chose not to air commercials, a decision he praised.

Lineker said: "I want to give ITV a pat on the back here, because I think they could have taken that option, but they're not. Well done for not doing that." He questioned the "Americanisation" of football driven by corporate interests.

Fan Reactions

FIFA introduced hydration breaks for all World Cup matches regardless of temperature, but many fans have criticised the move. Social media users expressed frustration, with one noting: "In a domed stadium, with climate control, 'hydration break.'" Another remarked: "Curacao scored and were forcing Germany into error. 'Hydration break' intervenes and Germany were collected post that."

Critics argue the breaks are merely opportunities for advertising, with one fan stating: "Air-conditioned stadium with a roof on does not require a 'hydration break.' We all know what this nonsense is." Another added: "Just not enjoying it at all at the moment. Top of that list is a three min Hydration (tactical) break in an indoor air con stadium. Four-quarter football is here."
