Stephen Fry and Nicola Sturgeon Confront Unfiltered Questions on The Assembly's Return

Sir Stephen Fry, former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, and Manchester rapper Aitch are among the prominent figures set to undergo intense questioning as ITV's acclaimed series The Assembly returns for a second season. The innovative programme features a panel of inquisitive interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent, or have learning disabilities, delivering candid and often surprising interrogations to a fresh roster of celebrities.

Expanded Line-Up and Episode Details

Joining Fry, Sturgeon, and Aitch in the new series are national treasures Sir Lenny Henry and actress Anna Maxwell Martin, with a sixth celebrity guest yet to be officially confirmed. The upcoming season will consist of seven episodes, including a special The Assembly: Unseen installment, marking an extension from the initial run.

Sir Stephen Fry, aged 68, will feature in the premiere episode, while Nicola Sturgeon, 55, appears in the second instalment. Both episodes are scheduled for broadcast in April, with exact dates to be announced by ITV. The series builds on the success of its debut, which aired last year to widespread critical acclaim and featured interviews with Danny Dyer, David Tennant, Jade Thirlwall, and Gary Lineker.

Production Team Enthusiasm and Viewer Reactions

Katie Rawcliffe, ITV's Director of Entertainment, Reality & Daytime Commissioning, expressed excitement about the diverse line-up, stating: 'This line-up really does offer something for everyone - The Assembly's no-holds-barred questions throw up all kinds of surprising revelations.' David Smyth, Entertainment Commissioning Editor at ITV, added: 'The Assembly are raring to go and with such a unique mix of famous faces to interview, they will have a ball coming up with their next set of questions. These celebrities really do need to be ready for anything.'

Michelle Singer from Rockerdale Studios, the production company behind the show, remarked: 'We're thrilled to be back and, better yet, back with such a fantastic group of celebrities getting the The Assembly treatment. Lots of surprises and laughter on the way, I guarantee.' Stu Richards, also of Rockerdale Studios, echoed this sentiment: 'Buzzing to be back. We've got national treasures all over this series. And some fantastic celebrity guests, too.'

Following the first series, viewers praised the programme as 'television at its best' and campaigned for its renewal. One fan commented: 'Just watch #TheAssembly with Danny Dyer what a fantastic show, I ended up crying my eyes out, very emotional but fantastic questions it was great.' Another noted: 'Just finished watching The Assembly. Unbelievable television. Heartwarming, and honest from beautiful people. Danny Dyer and David Tennant are superb, the singing is superb, loved every minute.' A third viewer urged: 'This show better be renewed and for longer episodes and a longer run. It’s so heartwarming and television at its best.'

Show Format and International Inspiration

ITV's official synopsis describes each episode as forcing celebrities to 'cast aside everything they were ever taught by their media trainers' as they face 'their most honest, funny, chaotic – and heartwarming – interview yet.' The celebrities, drawn from various showbiz sectors, will confront limitless topics, with 'no area out of bounds and no question off the table.' The format emphasises that 'carefully considered PR fluff won’t cut it on this show!'

The Assembly is adapted from the French series Les Rencontres du Papotin, which has hosted notable figures including President Emmanuel Macron. The show will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV Player, continuing its mission to deliver authentic and engaging television through its unique interview dynamic.
