After seven seasons, ‘The Good Doctor’ concluded with an emotional finale, leaving fans devastated as they bid farewell to Dr. Shaun Murphy and the staff of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Freddie Highmore, who portrayed the lead character, spoke to Variety about the final moments of filming and the journey of his character.
Highmore revealed that the last scene he shot was a quiet moment with Paige Spara’s character, Leah, where she convinces Shaun to confront the situations involving Claire and Dr. Glassman. He noted, “The show has always lived in these tiny little nuances and small moments between characters.” The scene was filmed on the last remaining set, the residence lounge, as other stages were being dismantled.
Describing the experience as akin to graduation, Highmore expressed a mix of nostalgia and excitement for the future. “You are nostalgic because you’re aware of how special these last few years have been… but at the same time, you are excited to do other things and to move on,” he said. He also highlighted the peace that came from ending the show on their own terms.
Regarding Shaun’s character arc, Highmore noted that the original end goal was for Shaun to become a father, but the show evolved beyond that. He praised the challenge of playing a constantly evolving character, contrasting with typical procedural shows where characters remain static. The finale saw Shaun leading a neurodivergent programme and being a father of two.
Highmore also reflected on a poignant scene in the penultimate episode where Shaun puts his arm around Dr. Glassman, played by Richard Schiff. He explained, “It comes from a place of him realising that… he does need to be the person to take care of Dr. Glassman.” Saying goodbye to Schiff was difficult, but Highmore acknowledged the significance of their characters’ relationship.
