Euphoria Season 3 Pays Moving Tribute to Late Star Eric Dane
Euphoria Season 3 Honors Eric Dane After Tragic Death

The highly anticipated third season of HBO's Emmy Award-winning drama Euphoria has premiered on HBO Max, marking a poignant return after a four-year hiatus. The new episodes feature returning fan favourites like Zendaya as Rue Bennett, Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard, Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs, and Hunter Schaefer as Jules Vaughn. However, the season also navigates the absence of several key figures, both on-screen and off.

A Solemn Opening Tribute

The season three premiere opens with a heartfelt dedication to actor Eric Dane, who portrayed Cal Jacobs, the complex father of Nate Jacobs. Dane tragically passed away in February 2026 at the age of 53 due to respiratory failure, following a previous diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease. The episode begins with a title card featuring a photograph of Dane, honouring his final performance in the series, as he had completed filming for season three prior to his death.

Dual Memorials for Lost Talents

Dane was honoured a second time at the conclusion of the premiere episode. Following the end credits, an in memoriam segment paid tribute to him alongside fellow Euphoria actor Angus Cloud and producer Kevin Turen. This dual tribute underscores the significant losses the show's community has endured between seasons.

Producer Kevin Turen died in November 2023 at age 44 after a cardiac emergency. Actor Angus Cloud, who played the beloved drug dealer Fezco "Fez" O'Neill, passed away in July 2023 from a fentanyl overdose at just 25 years old. His character's fate was addressed creatively within the narrative of season three.

Navigating Character Absences

Despite Cloud's real-life death, his character Fez was not written out of the show. Instead, the storyline explains that Fez received a 30-year prison sentence following the police raid on his home during season two. This plot development tragically cut short his budding romance with Lexi Howard, portrayed by Maude Apatow.

Series creator Sam Levinson addressed this creative decision in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, "I couldn't keep him alive in real life but I could keep his character alive in the show." Within the series, Rue Bennett encourages Lexi to contact Fez, indicating that other characters maintain connections with the kind-hearted dealer despite his incarceration.

Future Uncertainties and Past Departures

It remains unclear how Eric Dane's passing will be addressed within the Euphoria universe should the series be renewed for a fourth season. The show also continues without actress Barbie Ferreira, who chose to depart after season two, concluding her role as Kat Hernandez.

The premiere of Euphoria season three thus serves not only as a continuation of its gritty, emotional storytelling but also as a solemn memorial to the talented individuals lost during its production hiatus, ensuring their contributions are remembered by audiences worldwide.
