Isabel Hodgins, the actress behind Victoria Sugden on ITV's Emmerdale, has disclosed her intention to return to the soap in September after taking maternity leave. The character exited the village earlier this year following a series of dramatic events, including accidentally causing her brother John Sugden's death and being exposed by Joe Tate.
Maternity Leave and Return Timeline
Hodgins, who gave birth to her first child, spoke candidly on the podcast You Don't Know You're Born with co-star Danny Miller and Nigel Clucas. She stated: "In my ideal world, it would be September. And then it's all systems go. [That's when] it really starts with the juggling and potential mum guilt, and whatever." She emphasized that Emmerdale bosses left the decision to her, saying, "It was very much at my discretion how much [time] I wanted off."
Character's Departure and Future
Victoria Sugden fled the village after turning killer, but assured her brother Robert that she and her son Harry would return. Fans questioned whether the exit was permanent, but Hodgins' comments clarify her comeback plans. She reflected on her shifting perspective, noting, "For 20 years, work has been my priority. I will need to find a way to manage that."
New Sugden Family Member Arrives
During Victoria's absence, the Sugden clan expands with the arrival of Serena Sugden, played by West End star Casey Al-Shaqsy. Serena debuts within days, and her connection to the family remains mysterious—early hints suggested she might be Robert's cousin or tied to Sarah Sugden. Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: "The Sugdens are a core part of the Emmerdale fabric, and we are thrilled to welcome Casey to the family. Her character will be at the heart of some extremely gripping and unexpected storylines." Al-Shaqsy added: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining such an iconic show and playing a Sugden! Serena is a fantastic character with so much going on beneath the surface."
Emmerdale airs on ITV and is available on ITVX.
