Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle on Emmerdale, has addressed the harrowing sexual assault storyline that aired on Sunday night. The episode, moved from its usual slot due to football coverage, depicted Charity being attacked by Dr Caitlin Todd while she slept. The scene ended with Charity waking in horror and Todd leaving calmly.
In a video posted to the show's Instagram page, Atkins said: "In tonight's episode of Emmerdale, my character Charity was sexually assaulted by Dr Todd. These storylines can be extremely triggering, so please, if anyone needs help or support, visit itv.com/advice." The actress has played the role since 2000.
Viewers expressed distress on social media, with some noting the lack of a trigger warning on the YouTube version of the episode. One fan wrote: "Bloody hell #emmerdale maybe you should put a trigger warning on for those who may been affected by this in the past." Another said: "I hope #Emmerdale gets a fine and or massive warning... disgusting behaviour from TV!"
However, other viewers praised the soap for handling the sensitive subject. One wrote: "Tonight's #emmerdale is an extremely difficult watch but it was handled absolutely perfectly. Amazing performances from Emma Atkins & Caroline Harker..." Another added: "This storyline WILL help so many people. it doesn’t matter the gender, SA happens. lets open that conversation and get victims justice."
ITV had issued a warning before the linear broadcast, but some fans claimed it was missed on the streaming version. Emmerdale bosses have not yet commented on the discrepancy.
