Emmerdale fans have become convinced that newcomer Serena Sugden is not who she claims to be. The character, played by Casey Al-Shaqsy, arrived in the village last week and has already raised eyebrows with her intense curiosity about the Sugden family, particularly the late John Sugden.
Serena's Suspicious Arrival
Serena first appeared when she stopped to use the toilet and was spotted by Charity Dingle, who was in a distressed state. Charity confided in Serena about Dr. Todd and baby Leyla, and Serena listened attentively. After parting ways, Serena drove into the village and discovered that Robert Sugden operates Emmerdale Farm. She revealed she is homeless, living in her car, and that her grandfather was Robert's father's cousin, making her a distant relative.
Questioning About John Sugden
During Tuesday's double episode (June 30), Serena was invited to stay with Sarah Sugden after bonding at The Woolpack. However, when the topic of John Sugden arose, Serena admitted she knew the serial killer, prompting Sarah to become protective. John, Robert's half-brother, killed Nate Robinson, left Mackenzie Boyd for dead, and put his ex-fiancé Aidan Moore in a coma due to a hero complex.
In another scene, Serena asked Claudette Anderson if she knew John was a killer. Claudette replied, "Regardless of that man's actions, I won't speak ill of the dead." Serena then pressed, "Were you good friends? Was he good at his job?" Claudette retorted, "Why do you want to know?" Serena answered, "Interesting, finding out your cousin is a legit murderer, I want to fill in the gaps." Later, she reconnected with Robert, who offered her a place at the farm.
Fan Theories on Social Media
Viewers have taken to social media to share their suspicions. On X, one user wrote: "Yeahhhh Serena is a journalist, trying to get dirt out of friends and family #Emmerdale." Another commented: "Serena asking a lot of questions about John... #emmerdale." A third added: "There needs to be a John Suggers book for Serena maybe the same person who wanted to write one about John Stape could write it #Emmerdale."
On Reddit, a fan theorized: "I think Serena is either a journalist/true crime podcaster, a little different than usual, nothing sinister but just a little immoral or she thinks John did something to her mum." Another shared: "She's giving off opportunistic reporter vibes, using her blood relation to the people involved to get a more intimate story. She's homeless and has mentioned her mother was sick, so money could be a major driving factor."
Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV and ITVX.
