Matthew Burton, the inspirational teacher who became a household name after starring in Channel 4's 'Educating Yorkshire' in 2013, has been banned from his school following a disciplinary hearing. The headteacher of Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury was suspended pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct, the school has confirmed.
The ban comes as a surprise to many who remember Burton's compassionate handling of student Musharaf Asghar's stammer in the original series, which won him national acclaim. In the show, Burton used a technique from the film 'The King's Speech' to help Asghar overcome his speech impediment, leading to an emotional breakthrough that captivated viewers.
Burton, who has served as headteacher for the past six years, was due to appear in a new series of 'Educating Yorkshire' filmed between November 2024 and August 2025. The series, which used fixed-rig cameras to capture over 1,000 hours of footage, was set to address modern issues such as knife crime, ADHD, gender dysphoria, and the impact of mobile phones and AI on education.
A spokesperson for Thornhill Community Academy said: 'We can confirm that Mr Burton is currently banned from the school premises pending an investigation. We are unable to comment further at this stage.' The school has not disclosed the nature of the allegations against Burton.
Burton's wife Laura, who suffered a miscarriage during the filming of the first series, gave birth to their daughter Liv shortly after the show aired. In a previous interview, Burton described 2013 as a year that 'changed my life'. The outcome of the investigation remains awaited.
