EastEnders viewers were left in tears as Phil Mitchell said goodbye to his beloved best friend Nigel Bates in an emotional death scene that aired on Wednesday night. The episode, which was released on BBC iPlayer earlier, saw the beloved character breathe his last breath surrounded by family and friends.
A Long-Standing Character
Nigel, one of EastEnders' oldest characters, first appeared on the soap in 1992. Played by Paul Bradley, he was established as a friend of the Mitchell brothers: Grant (played by Ross Kemp, who recently returned to the show) and Phil (Steve McFadden). While Bradley's original run on the BBC soap ended in 1998, he made a comeback as Nigel in 2024. Since his return, the character has faced a series of health problems, including a dementia diagnosis and, in scenes aired earlier this month, a second bout of pneumonia that led to hospitalization.
The Emotional Farewell
In Wednesday's episode, Nigel's family and friends visited him in his care home to say their goodbyes, with the Mitchell brothers being the last to stop by. Phil was initially nervous and unsure what to say, but Nigel's wife Julie (played by Karen Henthorn) reminded him that although Nigel could not speak, he loved Phil and needed to know that he would be okay. Eventually, Phil mustered the courage to lean forward and tell his friend: "Nige, you know I was never any good at saying how I feel… Suppose it all builds up inside and I don't know how I feel and I can't let it out. You showed me how to be a different kind of man. You showed me how to be strong without using my fists. You showed me how to laugh when there wasn't much to laugh about. You're the best mate I've ever had, Nige."
Tearing up, Phil continued: "I love you. I'm going to be OK. We're all going to be OK. It's OK for you to go, Nige. You can go." Nigel then passed away, and Phil let go of his friend's hand before hugging his sobbing widow.
Viewer Reactions
Reacting to the heartbreaking scene on social media, viewers shared their devastation at the beautifully portrayed episode. One fan wrote: "Tonight's #EastEnders has to be one of the best episodes, ever. Terribly sad yet so beautifully done. Paul Bradley deserves all the awards for his portrayal as Nigel Bates. Steve McFadden, Ross Kemp and Karen Henthorn were also incredible. End of an era." Another viewer tweeted: "What an emotional episode, never cried so much in my life." A different fan called the episode a fitting goodbye for an Albert Square legend, while another post read: "So many thoughts after today's EastEnders. We have been so lucky to have had the marvellous Paul Bradley back for so long, and I'll miss him and Nigel very much. Some really terrific performances from everyone involved today. A fitting end to what has been a wonderful story."
