Former EastEnders star Jack Ryder, best known for playing Jamie Mitchell from 1998 to 2002, has spoken candidly about the pressures of fame and his 'nepo baby' background. The 40-year-old actor, now sporting a salt-and-pepper look, admitted he struggled with being labelled a heartthrob and found the frenzy difficult to handle.
Ryder, whose father is Wang Chung frontman Jack Hues, reflected on their shared experiences with fame. 'My dad was a famous pop star in America in the 80s and we've talked about this a lot. He never enjoyed fame and always found it confusing, and I think I felt much the same way,' he told The Sun.
His character's dramatic death in a Christmas Day car crash in 2002 blindsided him. 'When I said he was going to leave, they said they would keep the door open. Then Louise took over as producer and they said they wanted a good exit,' he told the Mirror. 'Jamie was always having an affair or another fight with Phil and I didn't want to be in a soap for the rest of my life.'
Ryder's personal life also made headlines. He married Hear'Say singer Kym Marsh in 2002, but the couple split in 2008 after she admitted to an affair with Hollyoaks star Jamie Lomas. Ryder was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of her infidelity.
Today, Ryder writes children's books, runs a mentoring business, and directs. He remains unrecognisable to many fans who remember his iconic blonde curtains, but continues to turn heads two decades after his soap debut.
