EastEnders viewers are growing concerned for Lauren Branning's future following a cryptic comment she made in Monday's episode (29 December). As Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and husband Peter Beale (Thomas Law) walked past the Queen Vic, which was cordoned off with police tape after Anthony Trueman's murder, she said: 'If anything ever happened to our sons...'
Fans took the line as a possible hint at a tragic storyline involving her sons Jimmy and Louie. One viewer said: 'Lauren saying, “if anything ever happened to our sons,” while looking at the police tape outside the Vic felt weird, hopefully it’s not setting something up.' Another added: 'I thought that line from Lauren was weird too, I hope they don't go down that route.'
The comment comes ahead of a New Year's Eve episode focusing on the Branning family, which will feature a flashforward to 2027 showing Max Branning (Jake Wood) about to marry a mystery woman. Max's recent liaison with Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) has led to speculation that she could be the bride.
In Monday's episode, Max gatecrashed his grandson Jimmy's christening after being uninvited. Lauren had barred him following his behaviour when granddaughter Abi Jr went missing. Max later learned that Cindy, who blames him for her son Steven's death, is the mother of Peter and thus the grandmother of Lauren's children.
Jake Wood has described Max as being 'at his lowest' in 2026 before the time jump. The flashforward episode is said to contain gaps that will be filled over the coming year, with the Brannings set to play a key role.
