Doctor Foster, the acclaimed BBC drama starring Suranne Jones, is set to return for a third and final series, nine years after its last episode aired. The announcement was made by the BBC on Wednesday, with filming scheduled to begin in the spring.
Created by Mike Bartlett, the series is inspired by the Greek myth of Medea and follows Gemma Foster, a successful GP who discovers her husband Simon (Bertie Carvel) is having an affair. The show became a cultural phenomenon in the 2010s, with Jones winning a BAFTA for Best Actress for her portrayal of a woman seeking revenge.
In the new series, Gemma is still working as a GP and living in the same house, but she has met someone new and is preparing to remarry. Her son Tom (Tom Taylor), who ran away from home at age 15 in series two, returns as an adult with questions for his parents.
Jones said of the return: 'When I got the call to ask if I wanted to return as Gemma Foster, I knew the time was right. We needed space from the first two series… For me, this time around it’s about accountability and questioning: Can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward?'
Bartlett added: 'I always hoped that we’d get to tell the final part of Gemma’s story – which is about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world. That feels as relevant now as when Gemma first found a blonde hair on the scarf.' He teased that the final chapter will involve 'secrets, betrayals, vengeance and perhaps one last dinner party.'
