The long-running BBC programme DIY SOS airs its final episode tonight (October 27), and presenter Nick Knowles has shared an emotional tribute ahead of the broadcast. The show, which began in 1999, has seen Knowles, his team and volunteers transform homes for deserving families.
Nick Knowles reflects on the show's legacy
Before the last episode, Knowles posted a collection of images on social media, writing: "Last one Tuesday this week - @bbcdiysos on 8pm BBC1.It's been a blast - it's been an honour - it's been emotional but most of all it's been about how resilient, kind, funny, generous and empathetic the Great British public are - I've loved every minute of it."
Fans were quick to react to the post, with many expressing disbelief that the broadcaster is putting the show on pause. One person commented: "Totally unfair, and it's so very sad to see such an amazing program come to an end. Thank you for all the beautiful dreams you've made come true for all those deserving families. Still in shock over this."
Fans call for the show to be saved
Another viewer wrote: "Absolutely gutted to see this come to an end, well done to Nick and all the team for such a brilliant programme and the 1000's of volunteer tradespeople. I do hope another channel brings you all back together very soon."
A third person added: "Can we petition to renew DIYSOS maybe @netflixuk @primevideouk @channel4." Another commented: "This is absolutely outrageous they have cancelled DIY SOS. You and the team will forever be missed by so many! Not all superheroes wear capes....sometimes they wear a purple polo shirt and a white hard hat @nickknowles and the team."
BBC confirms the show will be rested
Knowles announced the news earlier this month, sharing his disappointment that the programme will not be recording next year or returning in the same structure audiences recognise. He stated at the time: "I do understand there's no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions."
Since the announcement, a petition has been launched by fans, gathering over 43,000 signatures. The petition, titled 'Prevent the cancellation of beloved BBC show DIY SOS', was set up by self-employed plasterer David Claydon, who featured on the show last year.
Addressing the decision, a BBC spokesperson stated: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore."
"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show's past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."
DIY SOS continues Tuesday, October 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm.
