Disney Sparks Backlash With Chilling Mickey Mouse Horror Film

Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, has entered the public domain, allowing creators to reuse the character without Disney's permission. The result is 'Screamboat', a horror film set on a New York ferry where a murderous mouse terrorises passengers. The film stars David Howard Thornton, known for his role in 'Terrifier 2', suggesting a serious approach to horror.

The trend follows last year's 'Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey', which set a template for cheap, opportunistic horror films based on beloved characters. As more characters like Bugs Bunny, Popeye, and Betty Boop enter the public domain in coming years, similar horror adaptations are expected.

While some see this as inevitable and even amusing, others criticise the lack of imagination. However, the horror genre's recognisable structures make it an easy fit for such adaptations. Next year, Popeye and Tarzan become public domain, potentially leading to films about a mutant sailor or a jungle hunter.
