The cast of The Devil Wears Prada has expressed openness to a third film, but only if certain conditions are met, as the sequel hits cinemas two decades after the original. Meryl Streep, who plays Miranda Priestly, emphasised that the script must be strong, a sentiment echoed by co-star Emily Blunt, who told People magazine: “A good script. It's all about the script.”
Anne Hathaway added that “everybody has to say yes,” and Blunt clarified that this meant “the core four,” which includes Stanley Tucci, who plays art director Nigel. The original 2006 film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel, followed Hathaway’s character Andy Sachs as she worked for Streep’s formidable fashion magazine editor, a role partly inspired by Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
The sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, sees the main cast reprising their roles, with new additions including Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, and Simone Ashley. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway suggested that the sequel’s performance could influence the decision for a third film, stating: “I feel like there’s more road to explore. But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that when the film comes out.”
Tucci joked about the timeline, saying: “I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead.” Streep revealed that conversations about a sequel began as early as 2009, but the team waited until they had a strong concept. The original film grossed over $326 million worldwide, while the sequel has already made $233 million globally and received positive reviews.
