Death in Paradise Star's Surprising New Comedy Role

Death in Paradise star Danny John-Jules has taken on a surprising new comedy role in the BBC series Ann Droid. The actor, best known for playing Officer Dwayne Myers on the long-running crime drama, appears in the second episode as a taxi driver named Brian.

What Is Ann Droid About?

Ann Droid is a six-part comedy drama that centres on Sue (Sue Johnston), a lonely widower. Her son Michael (Paul Ready) buys her an AI eldercare robot, named Linda (Diane Morgan), to provide companionship and ensure her wellbeing. However, Sue makes her feelings about the technology abundantly clear, giving the robot a frosty reception. Over the course of the series, an unexpected connection develops between them, exploring themes of isolation, bereavement, the tension between humanity and technology, and growing older.

Danny John-Jules' Character

In the second episode, Sue meets her friend Eileen (Kathryn Hunter) waiting for transport to her aunt's 108th birthday celebration. The driver who arrives is Brian, played by Danny John-Jules. When Sue points out the questionable state of his vehicle, Eileen explains that Brian has been her driver for more than four decades. Brian responds: "And I've only been sober for the last five!" He later returns to pick up Eileen, remarking: "Oh, I need some more customer reviews. Preferably ones above the two stars I'm getting at the moment. Would you mind? Oh, and don't mention I got lost and had four pints at lunch or that I ran out of petrol and we had to walk the last 2km, ok?"
