Death in Paradise star Don Warrington shares filming update as Don Gilet takes over lead role

Death in Paradise star Don Warrington, who plays Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, has given fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse as filming for the new series gets underway. The 72-year-old actor posted several snaps on Instagram, including one of him next to a police car with Ginny Holder's character Darlene Curtis, and another of his character walking across a basketball court.

The update comes as Don Gilet prepares to replace Ralf Little as the lead detective, stepping into the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson. Gilet, 57, will make his debut in a feature-length Christmas special later this year, before a new series in 2025. His character arrives on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie from London and is not overly pleased with his new surroundings.

Gilet, known for roles in EastEnders and Sherwood, has begun filming in Guadeloupe alongside regulars including Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules. Of his casting, Gilet said: 'Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands.'

Ralf Little quit the lead role in March after five years, following the series 13 finale. In a video to fans, he called it an 'absolute privilege' to play DI Neville Parker. The new casting has divided fans, with some praising the historic choice of the first lead actor of colour, while others called it a 'missed opportunity' not to cast a woman.

Don Gilet previously appeared on the show in 2015 as a murderer, which has caused confusion among eagle-eyed fans. Filming is well underway, with Warrington's posts showing the island set filled with cast and crew.
