Darragh 'the Menace' Ennis has defended the outcome of Monday's episode of ITV's Beat The Chasers after viewers accused the show of being a 'stitch-up'. The episode, which aired on October 5, saw contestant Sam from Brighton narrowly lose to the Chasers with just one second remaining on their clock.
Sam, who works in the wine industry, had banked £4,000 in the Cash Builder round and opted to face five Chasers for a chance to win £75,000. In the final showdown, he timed out after incorrectly answering a question about which French fashion house produces Rouge Coco lipstick. Sam answered 'Coco Chanel', but the correct answer was 'Chanel'.
After the game, Darragh Ennis said: 'Everyone in the audience and everyone at home will be screaming about how unfair that is. It's horrible - but it's not unfair because exactly the same thing would have happened if we had given that answer.' Shaun 'the Dark Destroyer' Wallace added: 'You did fantastically well Sam - my heart goes out to you. This is one of the times where we as Chasers, in that particular moment, wanted you to win.'
Viewers took to social media to express their frustration, with some calling the result a 'stitch-up'. However, the show's producers have stood by the decision, noting that the rules were applied consistently. The episode was the sixth in the seventh series of the spin-off from ITV's The Chase.
