Daisy May Cooper quit Celebrity Traitors over BBC show rules

Daisy May Cooper withdrew from the first series of BBC's Celebrity Traitors at the eleventh hour alongside her brother Charlie Cooper, after the show's conditions made the experience seem not worth the fee on offer.

The actress and comedian, known for co-creating and starring in the BAFTA-winning sitcom This Country with Charlie, had initially agreed to appear on the reality programme. Speaking to The Independent, the 40-year-old explained that three stipulations ultimately proved insurmountable.

Three conditions behind the decision

Daisy revealed that she and Charlie had originally committed to taking part before becoming anxious about the terms. She explained: "We panicked. We were going to do it and then they said, 'Basically, you're going to stay in a s*** hotel,' and I thought, 'I don't know if I can do it'."

The accommodation was not the only issue. Daisy said she had been told she would not be able to contact her children frequently during the fortnight-long production schedule, and that she would not be permitted to share accommodation with her brother despite the siblings having intended to participate together.

It was the combination of the hotel arrangements, restricted access to her children and separate rooms that convinced the siblings to pull out. Daisy continued: "It just sounded like a f****** nightmare. I thought, 'F*** it. It's not enough money'."

Career since This Country

The comedian has continued to build her career since This Country earned widespread critical praise and claimed a BAFTA following its launch in 2017. She created and starred in the BBC sitcom alongside Charlie, drawing on their childhood in Cirencester for inspiration.

Daisy has since featured in two series of Am I Being Unreasonable? with a third currently in development, as well as Sky's Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Avenue 5, Celebrity Gogglebox and The Masked Singer. Away from the spotlight, she is raising three children under the age of eight with her former husband and current partner, DJ Anthony Huggins.

Latest series cliffhanger

Daisy was particularly eager to return to another comedy favourite, Last One Laughing. Reflecting on her reaction when the opportunity came about, she said: "Whatever is on, f****** clear my diary."

Her remarks come as the latest series of Celebrity Traitors continues. Friday night's episode concluded on a cliffhanger after actress Sharon Rooney and comedian Joanne McNally received an equal number of votes at the roundtable, leaving both facing the prospect of banishment. The crucial decision rested with content creator King Kenny, who had secured a double vote after obtaining a dagger during a mission for being deemed amongst the most trustworthy contestants. Audiences were kept in suspense regarding which participant would face elimination, as the episode concluded before Kenny's choice was disclosed.
