Coronation Street has confirmed the departure of Simon Barlow, a character who has been part of the ITV soap for 21 years. Actor Alex Bain, who has played the role for the past 16 years, will bow out in emotional scenes next week.
Simon will leave Weatherfield to join his father Peter Barlow on his boat, following Peter's exit in December and Tracy Barlow's recent departure. The character's exit comes after a series of troubling storylines, including a drink-driving crash.
In upcoming episodes, Simon's loved ones gather to see him off, with stepmother Leanne Battersby in tears. The scenes mark the end of Simon's time on the cobbles, 21 years after he was born on the show.
Alex Bain recently broke his silence about the exit, posting a farewell message on Instagram: 'Well my day is done! Nice and short day today! I'm gonna miss this little space some dearly when I go!' He added: 'So glad I've got some shooting days left! So thankful!'
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
