Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has revealed the on-set mishap that forced a script change during Thursday's dramatic episode (October 22), when Maria Connor confronted Sarah Platt at the Bistro.
The tense scenes followed Sarah's acquittal by the jury over Theo Silverton's death, allowing her to escape a prison sentence. However, her former partner Gary Windass received an eight-month jail term for perverting the course of justice, much to the dismay of Maria.
Glass smash goes wrong
As Sarah celebrated her freedom with relatives at the Bistro, Maria arrived and angrily thrust a pie into her face. But what ITV audiences didn't see was the earlier mishap when Maria was meant to furiously slam down a glass on the table.
In a behind-the-scenes video posted on Instagram, Maria bangs a glass onto the table after sarcastically toasting Sarah's release. As it shatters, Samia swears before asking: "Was that a real glass? I'm so sorry." A fellow cast member playfully remarked on her impressive strength before she checked whether those seated at the table were unharmed, as the broken glass had scattered in front of them.
Script amended after blunder
Speaking on Thursday's episode of Loose Women, Samia explained: "We had to amend the script after that. It was a real glass, usually we have sugar glass, so I thought it could've been a sugar glass, but yeah, I don't know my own strength."
Discussing throwing the pie in her co-star's face, the ITV actress admitted: "I loved it, I'm not going to lie. It's normally Maria, the one getting the pie in the face, so for once it was really enjoyable to just stick it to Tina (O'Brien). We had such a fun day at work, it was brilliant. It was quite nerve-wracking because I only really got one shot at it."
Viewers call for more bloopers
It didn't take long before viewers began commenting on the amusing gaffe, with many expressing similar sentiments. One viewer remarked, "Love it, more bloopers to the people, please." Another posted: "Oops. Would love to see more bloopers."
A further fan posted: "Keep the bloopers coming." While another viewer added: "Need bloopers for Saturday nights to watch! And maybe Sunday when Corrie isn't on on a Sunday! Corrie bloopers!!!" One viewer commented: "This is brilliant." Meanwhile, another posted: "Keep the bloopers coming."
Coronation Street is on ITV1 and ITVX.
