Coronation Street fans believe they have uncovered the controversial new storyline for Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), which the actress previously hinted would make viewers dislike her character. The theory emerged after this week's episodes revealed that Bethany's mother, Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien), is the killer of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).
Actress Lucy Fallon teased divisive plot
Lucy Fallon, 30, who plays Bethany, hinted at the upcoming drama during the Grand National Festival at Aintree Racecourse. When asked about future storylines, she said: 'She does! I can't tell you what it is, but it's not going to be great. I don't think people are going to be happy about it. This one is low-key her fault. Everyone is going to be like, 'She is a d**k.' Which is fine.'
On playing a potentially villainous role, Fallon added: 'I don't mind what it is as long as it's a good one. Being in the Platts is a good family to be in. It's an amazing honour to get a storyline, I don't take it for granted at all.'
Sarah Platt revealed as Theo's killer
On Monday, Coronation Street confirmed that Sarah Platt killed Theo Silverton during a confrontation. Sarah attacked Theo with a metal pole, causing him to fall over scaffolding to his death. The only other person aware of the secret is Gary Windass (Mikey North), who has been helping Sarah keep the murder hidden.

Tina O'Brien on playing the murderer
Tina O'Brien, who portrays Sarah, discussed the challenge of keeping the secret. She said: 'There was a lot of debate in the green room as soon as we were told there was going to be a murderer. A lot of people were playing Cluedo… So by the time it got to me to go for my meeting, I was a bit like, I think it's me!'
She added: 'But I genuinely didn't worry, at the end of the day this job is incredible, but to be an actor is not necessarily a job for life. So, I just was really excited to be given the honour of being the murderer, and then hopefully, however it plays out, I'll enjoy Sarah's arc.'
Reflecting on the difficulty of keeping the plot under wraps, O'Brien said: 'I've literally been a big bag of nerves! I told my mum and I just recently told Scarlett and my son Beau. Yeah. It's really hard having to keep it quiet for that long, especially when you're online, you're seeing all the chat on social media… Actually filming these scenes the weeks after have been the hardest thing I've ever filmed because I felt like my face looked guilty constantly and I was like, everyone's going to know it's me instantly.'
As the storyline unfolds, viewers are left to speculate whether Bethany will betray her mother or if another twist awaits.
