Coronation Street fans believe Maria Connor could become a pivotal figure in the ITV soap's latest whodunnit as police struggle to determine who killed Theo Silverton.
Maria's Changing Story
Maria Connor, played by Samia Longchambon, was asked to provide another statement regarding her whereabouts on the night of Theo Silverton's murder. The evil scaffolder, portrayed by former Tracy Beaker star James Cartwright, was killed off during the much-hyped Murder Week, and the investigation is now underway.
DS Lisa Swain, who often locks up innocent people, wrongly charged Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) with murder. When the university student was released, the incompetent copper had to start over.
Her colleague DC Kit Green has remained convinced from the start that Gary Windass (Mikey North), Theo's former colleague, was hiding something but couldn't pinpoint what—especially after his wife Maria told police they had wiped the CCTV from his workplace on that fateful night because it contained footage of them hooking up.
This was, of course, a lie. However, Maria is unaware that Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) has been getting more involved in the case, comforting Gary as his mental health spirals, though it is not yet clear what the two are hiding.
Friday's Episode
On Friday night's episode of the world's longest-running TV soap, Maria called Gary while waiting for him in Speed Daal and demanded he hurry up before confiding in Shona: "I don't know...maybe I'm just overthinking it but I feel like something's not right between us at the moment. To look at us together, you wouldn't think anything was wrong. You'd think we were fine."
Viewers also watched as Sarah tried, unsuccessfully, to hack Kit's laptop.
Later, DS Swain arrived at the salon with Kit in tow, flipping her hair and announcing: "We need another statement about where Gary was on the night Theo was murdered. We need her to go over it again. In case she missed anything out the first time."
Maria later appeared in the pub, telling Gary she had stuck to the story but said: "Look, Gary, if the police find out I lied about your alibi...Do you know what? I'm just gonna stop asking you. It's probably best I don't know anything."
Gary insisted: "Look, there's nothing to know. I'm not keeping anything from you, OK? Now please keep your voice down." Just then, Maria looked Gary up and down, implying she did not believe him at all.
Fan Reactions
Taking to X to react to the mysterious scenes, one fan said: "Gary is hiding something, but what? It seems too obvious for him to be the killer." Another said: "Maria’s totally gonna change her story about Gary now because she thinks he’s cheating. Gary should just go on and tell her the truth." A third wrote: "I don’t know if I believe that Maria told the same story this time around. Her response to Gary said otherwise to me." A fourth added: "That’s proper dirty of Sarah to attempt to access Kit’s police login, so she can what rid of evidence on Gary. I hate to say this, but I hope Kit catches her eventually on her shifty behavior as well!"
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITV X.
