Coronation Street viewers are convinced that a long-standing character could be facing imprisonment, and they are far from pleased about the prospect. Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) has been a mainstay on the ITV programme since 1986, and fans now worry her departure from the cobbles could be imminent.
Sally's Recent Storylines
Throughout the decades, the cherished busybody has featured in numerous significant storylines, from her various relationships to battling breast cancer. Her tenure in Weatherfield has been anything but uneventful, particularly in recent months since husband Tim's (Joe Duttine) niece Lucy Parkinson (Anya Lewis) came to stay.
Sally and Tim welcomed troubled Lucy into their home following her father Richie's (Nathan Sussex) imprisonment earlier this year for the murder of her mother. Subsequently, however, it emerged that Lucy may have been the actual perpetrator, with her father accepting responsibility.
The Dramatic Confrontation
Tensions between Sally and Lucy have been mounting, culminating in a dramatic confrontation during Tuesday's episode (October 27). While alone at No. 4, Sally was anxious, worried that Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) had broken out of jail.
During a power failure, Sally was shocked to encounter someone wearing a ghost costume. In her frightened state, Sally struck the figure with a flower vase. Upon Tim's return home, however, he was bewildered to discover Lucy bloodied, as she had been the one beneath the ghost outfit whom Sally had struck.
Furthermore, preview information for upcoming episodes indicates Sally and Tim receive an unexpected visit from a social worker. She informs them that Lucy telephoned her. Casting a triumphant glance towards Sally, Lucy departs. Ruth subsequently discloses to a deeply shocked Sally and Tim that Lucy has been maintaining a diary, in which she alleges Sally of being extremely domineering and making unpleasant remarks about her privately.
Fans React
Following the confrontation with Lucy, viewers now worry that Sally's departure from the cobbles could be imminent. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person said: "Wouldn't surprise me if Sally goes to prison for hitting Lucy."
Another viewer commented: "Another one behind bars then!" alluding to characters such as Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) and Gary Windass (Mikey Northern) who have recently been imprisoned. A third distressed supporter also wrote: "I really hope not!" A further fan then added: "I think the same, she's going to get in trouble for sure."
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
