Daniel Osbourne's attacker was revealed on the Boxing Day episode of Coronation Street, as the soap delivered a shocking twist. The teacher, played by Rob Mallard, was found unconscious by Evelyn Plummer early in the morning after being attacked on Christmas Day. Initially, no clue was given as to who was responsible.
In hospital, Daniel insisted he did not know who attacked him, claiming his watch and wallet were stolen. However, pub owner Maggie Driscoll had already confronted her grandson Will, who admitted to the assault. Will confessed he attacked Daniel because he was furious about failing a mock exam and believed Daniel hated him.
A flashback revealed that Maggie witnessed the attack from an upstairs window. After Will returned inside, she checked Daniel's pulse and then robbed him of his wallet and watch. Maggie later covered for Will, agreeing not to tell his parents, but was subsequently thrown out of the pub by her son Ben after refusing to apologise to Eva for revealing a past abortion.
This is not the first glimpse into Maggie's questionable morals. A previous flashback episode showed her pushing her husband Alan down the stairs, killing him, after he called her controlling and manipulative. The Boxing Day episode ended with Ben raising a toast to Maggie, unaware of her dark secrets.
