Coronation Street detective Kit Green may have a surprising plan for nemesis Gary Windass after discovering his partner Sarah Platt is Theo Silverton's real killer, actor Jacob Roberts has hinted.
Kit, played by Roberts, is torn between protecting Sarah and his own career. While previous hints suggested Kit would frame Gary for the crime, Roberts now teases a different outcome.
Kit's Shocking Discovery
Kit was 'incredibly shocked' to learn Sarah killed Theo, especially after being lied to. 'As soon as Sarah found the ring, it completely delayed his plan and put a massive dampener on things,' Roberts said. He suspected Sarah and Gary were involved but never expected Sarah to be the actual killer.
Protecting Sarah vs. Self-Preservation
Roberts explained: 'He will protect her as much as he can, but Kit is ultimately going to protect himself first. He suddenly realises he’s been living with a murderer right under his nose. He isn't going to be totally selfless here - he will only protect her as long as his own career is safe.'
Kit's career takes priority over his relationship. 'No, his career means everything to him. The trust between them is massively gone. He isn't prepared to lose anything because he had absolutely nothing to do with the crime,' Roberts added.
Betrayal Over Gary's Involvement
Kit feels betrayed that Sarah turned to her ex Gary rather than him. 'Kit knows how to cover things up way better than Gary ever could, so he feels like Sarah just picked the wrong person in a moment of panic. Gary should have honestly just called Kit himself,' Roberts said.
Roberts dismissed the idea that Kit understands Sarah's choice due to his police role: 'No, absolutely not. First of all, she should have never been on that roof in the first place with a guy like Theo. But turning to Gary? No. That’s her ex. Going to an ex for advice or help like that is completely out of order and non-negotiable for Kit.'
What Would Kit Have Done?
If Sarah had called Kit immediately, he would have protected her. 'Absolutely. He’s done stuff like that before. He’s a bit of a dodgy copper, so he knows exactly how the system works. It was self-defence and he could have handled it. The problem now is that it’s much harder to justify because she kept quiet about Theo’s death for so long and in doing so, she has put Kit in serious jeopardy.'
Gary as a Scapegoat?
When asked if Kit would send an 'innocent-ish' man like Gary to prison to save Sarah, Roberts said: 'Ideally, he would try to get them both off. But if it comes down to a direct choice between Sarah and Gary, he is always going to choose Sarah.'
Sarah's determination to protect Gary makes Kit doubt their relationship. 'It makes him doubt it massively. He's clever enough to know there’s a lot of history there and that they’ve probably protected each other over the years, but it’s still a huge dint to his pride. He doesn't think she's physically cheating on him, but in a way, an emotional affair can be worse. You just don't go to your ex for help with something this massive. It's totally out of order.'
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
