Gary Windass has been sent to prison on Coronation Street, sparking speculation that the character could be leaving the ITV soap. The builder, played by Mikey North, first appeared on the cobbles in 2008 alongside the rest of the Windass clan, including his mother Anna, played by Debbie Rush.
Throughout his time on the show, Gary has been central to numerous major storylines, from his various relationships to his struggle with PTSD. Most recently, he became embroiled in helping Sarah Platt, played by Tina O'Brien, conceal the killing of Theo Silverton, portrayed by James Cartwright. The abuser met his end in April following the exposure of his campaign of terror against Todd Grimshaw, played by Gareth Pierce.
Sarah's Trial and Gary's Sentence
Sarah was ultimately revealed as Theo's killer, having acted in self-defence, and was subsequently remanded in custody - though she assured Gary she wouldn't reveal his role in the crime to authorities, reports the Daily Star. However, last week saw Sarah's trial conclude with her acquittal, bringing relief to her and the Platt household.
During Tuesday's episode (October 20), Gary appeared in court where he received an eight-month prison sentence in an unexpected turn of events. An angry Maria, played by Samia Longchambon, challenged Sarah, who appeared confused by the verdict and insisted to Maria that she hadn't implicated Gary regarding the disposal of the murder weapon.
Fans React to Gary's Fate
The episode concluded with Gary behind bars, speaking on the phone to a tearful Maria before ending the call and returning to his cell. Viewers have been stunned by Gary's sentence, with many speculating this could signal a temporary departure from the show.
On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one viewer commented: "Ludicrous, Sarah gets away with it and Gary in prison. Hope he isn't leaving!". Another fan suggested: "I think he will just for a while." A third predicted: "He might get released early for good behaviour." Sharing similar sentiments, someone else added: "I thought the same as well."
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
