Coronation Street newcomer Sydney Martin has officially joined the cast as Betsy Swain, the daughter of Detective Lisa Swain. The 22-year-old actress, who plays a 16-year-old on the show, revealed her relief that the secret is finally out after her character was initially credited vaguely as 'Sabrina's friend'.
Martin, who is making her television debut, expressed her gratitude for landing the role, which she described as a dream job. She shared that she is older than her character, which has helped her understand the serious themes of the Lauren Bolton storyline. 'To be a little bit older and understand the serious topics it's dealing with more has been nice,' she said.
The actress, who previously worked six days a week at Tesco to support her acting career, handed in her notice after getting the part. She recalled her father's humorous reaction, joking about the lack of a reference from the supermarket. Martin also credited her family for their support, noting that she was the first in her family to attend university.
Martin discovered on her first day of filming that she shares a connection with co-star Calum Lill, who plays Joel Deering. The revelation came as a pleasant surprise, adding to her excitement about joining the Coronation Street family.
