A Coronation Street writer has criticised a recent storyline, describing the return of a character thought to be dead as 'ridiculous'. Jan McVerry, a writer for the ITV soap, expressed her dismay over the resurrection of DS Lisa Swain's ex-wife Becky, who was believed to have been killed in the line of duty.
Speaking on the Stateside Street podcast, McVerry revealed that the idea was initially 'tossed in like a hand grenade' during a writers' meeting and was 'kind of laughed off'. She voiced concerns that the plot would 'break faith with the viewers' and undermine the grief portrayed by Lisa's character.
McVerry admitted she and fellow writer Ella Greenhill 'hated the story' but ultimately took on the task of writing Becky's return to 'make it the very best version' possible. She acknowledged that while some fans have loved it, others have hated it, but at least it has sparked conversation.
Amy Cudden, who plays Becky, defended the storyline, saying she expected fans to be 'furious' but argued that it makes for 'really good TV' and an emotional journey for viewers. The return has caused tension as Becky seeks to reunite with Lisa, who is now in a relationship with Carla Connor.
