Coronation Street viewers were reduced to tears on Wednesday night as the soap aired what many described as 'the most distressing scenes ever'. The long-running drama has been exploring a coercive control storyline involving Todd Grimshaw, played by Gareth Pierce, and his abuser Theo Silverton, portrayed by James Cartwright.
The episode saw Todd finally report Theo to the police after a brutal attack left him with a bloodied face and barely able to walk. He stumbled to his best friend Sarah Platt's flat, where she immediately recognised the signs of domestic abuse. At the police station, Todd broke down in tears as he detailed the abuse he had suffered, including being isolated from friends, forced to eat cold food, and coerced into marriage.
Meanwhile, Gary Windass caught Theo attempting to flee and prevented his escape by removing the keys from his van. Theo was later arrested and ordered to spend the night in a cell while police began their investigation. Sarah took Todd to hospital, where doctors discovered he had a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding.
The episode concluded with a powerful monologue from DS Lisa Swain, who addressed the issue of domestic abuse directly. Viewers took to social media to praise the performances and the handling of the sensitive subject matter.
